“The old adage of it takes a village to raise a child can also be applied to a garden, because sometimes it takes that same village to build a garden.”
AT Garden Spaces
A Little Background
We began this landscape like many other gardens….
Evaluating and understanding what was needed by the client and the surrounding environment in order for us to create a space that was inclusive of everyone’s needs and that of the surrounding environment.
The existing garden was over grown with Kikuyu grass, unwanted scattered shrubs, undulating mounds of ground that created tripping hazards and decking that was rotting away, becoming dangerous to the owner and her young family.
With a garden like this there is only one place to start and that’s with a fresh slate. So in came the machinery to remove any unwanted vegetation and structures.
Once the vegetation and unwanted structures were removed we mounded up any existing soil, otherwise clay in this instance. We try to utilise as many resources that are currently onsite and soil is often something that is over looked or unsalvageable to the untrained eye.
Utilising this resource worked to our advantage and we were able to select the right species of plants that would thrive in these conditions, whilst creating specific spaces for those species that needed a more well drained medium to grow in.
With the use of Volcanic Basalt rocks, permeable pathways, sawn organic bluestone steppers and densely planted out garden beds we were able to bring this garden to life.
None of which would have been achieved in the time frame if the young boys of this single mother didn’t help out. All set out to help bring wheel barrows of compost, soil, mulch, and plants over whilst we implemented them into the garden.
The old adage of it takes a village to raise a child can also be applied to a garden, because sometimes it takes that same village to build a garden.
